Alex Prideaux is an accomplished, creative and proficiently practical tensile fabric structure specialist.
As Technical Director at Special Structures Lab, he provides clients and collaborators with a range of unique and extensive experience in technical textile architecture, membrane engineering and lightweight structure installations for both temporary, portable and permanent applications.
Alex is well versed in the creative processes and core principles of lightweight fabric architecture. His deep knowledge of 3D textile design, membrane engineering, structural analysis and fabrication detailing is unique. He has a wealth of hands-on installation experience with large-span tensile fabric structures, both portable and permanent. These skillsets fuel his passion and push his boundaries when providing design and engineering services to fellow architects, engineers, designers, urban planners, construction experts or event creatives.
With a love for lightweight architecture, contemporary design and environmentally led innovation, Alex thrives in solving the challenges presented by complex projects for often demanding applications. With over 25 years of experience across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Alex has worked with an array of organisations including Disney, Sands Group, HSBC, Swire, amfAR, Art Basel, The Peninsular Group, Formula E and Aramco. He was based in Hong Kong for over a decade before returning to the UK with his family. His time in South East Asia enabled him to design and deliver a variety of permanent and portable tensile fabric structures in accordance with stringent structural building compliance, plus the added challenges of extreme environmental conditions such as monsoon rains and typhoon wind speeds.
Alex has a Masters degree in Membrane Structures Engineering from the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau, Germany and an Archineer® degree in Tensile Fabric Architecture from the Institute of Membrane & Shell Technologies (IMS Bauhaus).
He is a Council member for the Guild of TentMasters® and continues to aid the development and promote TDS industry training programs and standards in the UK and abroad for individuals and companies operating within the portable and permanent tensile fabric structure industries.
